Helping screenwriters succeed since 2007
To get the most accurate, deep-dive analysis of your screenplay’s industry standard compliance, our engine requires a native Final Draft (.fdx) file.
If you write in another program, don’t worry. Converting your script to an .fdx file is quick and won’t mess up your formatting. Find your software below for a quick, step-by-step walkthrough.
1.Open Export Menu: In your open script.
Click the File menu (or the three-dot ellipsis icon in the left sidebar) and select Export.
2.Select Final Draft Format: Choose file type.
In the pop-up options, look under the “Document” section and select Final Draft (.fdx).
3.Download the File: Save locally.
Click the Export button at the bottom of the window to download the converted .fdx file directly to your computer.
1.Access Export Options: In your open script.
Go to the top menu bar, click File, and select Export.
2.Choose Final Draft: Select format.
From the sub-menu that appears, click on Final Draft (.fdx).
3.Name and Save: Save locally.
Choose your destination folder, name your file, and click Save.
1.Open Export Settings: In your open script.
Click the File menu icon in the top-left corner (or the Export icon in the right-hand sidebar).
2.Select Final Draft: Choose format.
Under the export format options, choose Final Draft (.fdx).
3.Generate and Download: Save locally.
Click Export. Arc Studio will quickly process the file and prompt you to save the completed .fdx file to your drive.
Depending on whether you are running an older version (Screenwriter 6) or the newer 6.5/7+ versions, the menu phrasing might look slightly different, but the core process remains the same.
1.Initiate File Export: In your open script.
Click File in the top menu and select Export To (or Save As if you are on an older version).
2.Set File Type to FDX: Select format.
In the “Format” or “Save as type” dropdown menu, select Final Draft (.fdx).
3.Execute Save: Save locally.
Name your script, verify the location, and click Save or Export.
Because Celtx does not natively support Final Draft .fdx exports, we use a reliable, free, intermediate step to guarantee your margins, page breaks, and element tags remain completely unbroken.
1.Download from Celtx: In your open script.
Open your script in Celtx, click File, and select Export to Fountain (or PDF).
2.Open the Free Conversion Utility: No login required.
Go to WriterSolo.com (this is a secure, completely free screenwriting tool run by WriterDuet—no account, email, or login is required to use it).
3.Open the File: Load your script.
Inside WriterSolo, click File > Open and select the Fountain or PDF file you just downloaded from Celtx.
4.Save as FDX: Final conversion.
Click File > Export As and choose Final Draft (.fdx) from the format list.
